S90 Slow thinner for dyes/stains

Slow-evaporating thinner for Technocolor solvent-borne dyes and stains. Made for cutting stains on open-pored wood: the slow evaporation improves flow, gives even, gradual drying and reduces runs, bubbles and lap marks. Does not change the dye shade. Use at the ratio given for the material being thinned. Test first when using it with other brands' materials. Per the dealer, the thinned material can be applied by spray gun, brush or wiping.

  • CTU, CLT, CIT, CPS dyes/stains on open-pored wood — oak, ash, anegre, mahogany
  • Large panels or a hot shop where S10/S12 flash too fast and leave lap marks
  • Spray-and-wipe (CPS, CIT) — more time to wipe
  • UV schedule on anegre: CPS 100 / CFC3 200 / S90 200

    CTU universal transparent dyes (CTU1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 21–30) on open-pored wood. The same pages list S10, S12 or water as alternatives. Optional binder CFS1/CFH1 at 0–200 %.

    Catalogue p.5 gives the same 500–1000 % range, spray at 80–100 g/m².

  • CLTThinner
    % by weight: 500–1000 %official% by volume: 500–1000 %official

    Kromolux CLT dyes (CLT1–CLT10), sprayed at 80–100 g/m². Alternatives: S10, S12, LZC97, water. Binder CFS1/CFH1 0–200 %.

  • CITThinner
    % by weight: 500–2000 %official% by volume: 500–2000 %official

    Kromoroller CIT dyes (CIT1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 9280): spray-and-wipe or spray at 80–100 g/m², roller 5–15 g/m². Alternatives: S10, S12, LZC97. Binder CIC11/CIC12/CFS1 0–40 %.

On a roller coater the slow S90 mainly extends open time on the roller and belt; the roller lays only 5–15 g/m².

  • CPSThinner
    % by weight: 500–2000 %official% by volume: 500–2000 %official

    CPS pigmented dye concentrates (CPS9, CPS10 and the CPS range): spray-and-wipe or spray at 80–100 g/m², roller 10–20 g/m². Alternatives: S10, S12. Binder CFS1 0–400 %.

  • CPS / CTUThinner
    % by weight: 500–1000 %catalog

    Catalogue 2025–2026 p.5: CTU and CPS — thinner S10, S12, S90 at 500–1000 %, 80–100 g/m² (CPS by roller 10–20 g/m²).

For CPS the catalogue gives 500–1000 % but the official CPS page gives 500–2000 %; the upper limit disagrees.

  • CPS / CFC3Thinner
    % by weight: 200 %schedule

    Schedule 'Flat anegre-veneered panels (UV)': sand P150–P220 → stain CPS 100 / CFC3 200 / S90 200 at 60–80 g/m² → 5 min at 20–25 °C → UV filler VTS20011 → UV primer VTS20029 ×2 → UV lacquer VTL20030 (matt) or VTL30100 (gloss).

Here S90 is 200 % on the CPS concentrate (plus CFC3 200 %), i.e. 400 % total dilution — below the 500–2000 % on the CPS page. CFC3's role is not described in the local sources. Anegre is open-pored, hence S90.

Percentages are per 100 parts of component A.

Coats

Flash-off

Why ru

S90 is never sprayed on its own — this is how a stain cut with S90 goes on. Small 1.0–1.3 mm tip, wide fan, one even wet pass. The slow evaporation lets colour soak into open pores and avoids lap marks on large panels; with CPS and CIT it leaves time to wipe back with a rag after spraying.

Consumption
80–100
Why ru

Production staining with S90-cut stains: keep fluid pressure at the bottom of the range — on verticals the slow thinner runs more easily.

Cloth or pad

Consumption
80–100
Why ru
На официальных страницах CPS/CIT указано «распылить и протереть» при 80–100 г/м²; когда нужна протирка, обычно берут медленный разбавитель — он задерживает испарение.

Spray-and-wipe (CPS, CIT): S90 lengthens the window for wiping and packing colour into the pores — handy on oak, ash, anegre.

Roller

Consumption
5–15 (CIT) / 10–20 (CPS)
Why ru
Расход при вальцевании — с официальных страниц CIT/CPS; медленный разбавитель, чтобы морилка дольше оставалась открытой на вальцовых машинах, — стандартная практика линий, Technocolor для S90 это отдельно не указывает.

Roller-coating CIT/CPS dyes on flat panels: S90 slows drying on the roller and on the belt.

Brush

The dealer lists brushing. The slow S90 gives time to even out the stain without lap marks; wipe off the excess with a rag.

Choosing
Fine pores (beech, birch, maple) → S10; medium → S12; open pores (oak, ash, anegre), large panels, shop above ~25 °C → S90. S12 and S90 can be blended to tune the speed. The slower the thinner, the deeper and more even the colour goes into the pores, and the longer you wait before priming.recommended
Temperature and humidity
stain dried 5 min at 20–25 °C before UV fillerschedule
Don'ts
  • Don't use S90 to thin 2K PU/acrylic materials — those take S30/S31/S50/S70/S80, with S100 as the retarder.
  • Don't prime over wet stain: S90 dries slower than S10/S12 — allow at least 10–15 min at 20 °C or force-dry.
  • Don't flood S90-cut stain onto verticals — it will run.
  • S90 is not a hardener and does nothing for cure.

Safety: Highly flammable liquid. Use in a ventilated spray booth with an organic-vapour (A2) respirator and nitrile gloves. Keep away from ignition sources; wiping rags go in a closed metal bin (a slow solvent stays in the rag longer).
