CIC12
CIC12 Kromoroller wiping binder
Wiping binder for Technocolor Kromoroller CIT stains. Added to the ready-to-use (already let-down) CIT stain, it improves the rheology so the stain can be wiped on evenly with a sponge or rag. On open-grain timber such as oak and ash it picks out the pores and lifts the figure. Never used on its own.
- Wiping (or spray-and-wipe) of Kromoroller stains CIT1, CIT2, CIT3, CIT8, CIT9, CIT9280
- Grain/pore highlighting on oak, ash and other open-pored timber
- Works on any wood, but gives the biggest effect on open-grain hardwoods

Answers are based on the CIC12 data and the products it mixes with.
Mixing matrix
- % by weight: 20–30 %dealer
Whenever a CIT stain is to be wiped on, or sprayed then wiped.
Let the CIT concentrate down first (S10/S12/S90/LZC97, 500–2000 %), then stir in 20–30 % CIC12. The dealer's basis is the ready-to-use stain.
- % by weight: 0–40 %official% by volume: 0–40 %official
Official allowed range for the binder in CIT stains; 0 % = no binder.
Official alternatives to CIC12 are CIC11 and CFS1 (the CIT8 page lists LZC97 instead of CFS1). In practice stay at 20–30 % (dealer).
- % by weight: 500–2000 %official% by volume: 500–2000 %official
Letting down the CIT stain that CIC12 then goes into. For wiping prefer S90 (slow) — more open time to wipe.
Dealer describes S90 as the slow thinner made for stains on open-grain wood.

Flood the stain on (spray, sponge or brush), let it just start to flash, then wipe with a sponge/soft rag or wiping brushes along the grain, taking the excess off the surface and leaving the colour in the pores. Catalog: wiping with a sponge or soft rag removes the surplus after the material has been put on.

Process and compatibility
- Substrate preparation
- Clean, dry, dust-free timber with the pores open: P150–P220 on flats, K60–K80 flexible pads on profiles (as in the official oak schedules). Don't go finer than P240 — you burnish the pores shut and the stain won't take.recommended
- Goes over
- bare wood
- Goes into
- CIT1, CIT2, CIT3, CIT8, CIT9, CIT9280
- Sanding
- Don't sand the stained layer — you'll cut through the colour. Sand the primer over it.recommended
- Temperature and humidity
- Work at 18–25 °C; in a hot shop let the CIT down with slow S90 so you have time to wipe.recommended
- Don'ts
- Don't use CIC12 on its own — it's an additive for CIT stains
- Don't go over 40 % (official binder limit)
- Don't seal before a test shows the stain won't move. The safe wait is the dealer's full dry (3–4 h at 20 °C); sealing too soon can make the sealer lift and smear the colour
- Don't mix it into water-borne stains (e.g. CTH, CLT)

Safety: Flammable solvent-borne material (as mixed with CIT and S10/S12/S90). Use in an extracted booth, wear an organic-vapour respirator and nitrile gloves. Lay wiping rags out flat to dry or keep them in a closed metal can with water — they can self-heat.
