CPS53 Solvent-borne pigment stain, American walnut

Solvent-borne pigment wood stain, ready colour 'American walnut' — a warm dark-brown walnut tone. Evens out colour variation and hides wood defects, levels well, lightfast. Spray, spray-and-wipe or roller-coat. Technocolor files the CPS5x range as pigment wiping stains (incl. exterior use); the dealer sells them as furniture stains.

  • Staining furniture in any wood species
  • Faking American walnut on pale species (birch, beech, alder, pine)
  • Evening out colour variation in solid wood and veneer
  • Pore highlighting on oak/ash — spray and wipe
  • Exterior timber under a weatherproof topcoat (CPS5x series per official site)

2025/26 catalog figure for the whole CPS series (2022 catalog: 500-2000 %). The dealer lists no let-down for CPS51-62; sibling ready colours show 0-100 % (CPS037) and 200-1000 % (CPS22). 5-10 parts thinner gives only a light tint; for a full walnut start low and dial in on a sample board.

  • CFS1Additive
    % by weight: 20–40 %recommended% by volume: 20–40 %recommended

Solvent binder: locks the pigment in; with binder the stain can be wiped on (pore highlighting on open-grain wood — catalog). Which code (CFS1/CFS3/CFS4) is the dedicated wiping binder is not stated officially.

  • CFS1 / CFS3 / CFS4Additive
    % by weight: 0–400 %catalog

The 2022 catalog lists CFS1, CFS3, CFS4 at 0-400 % with no roles. The dealer (CPS22) names the binders 'for spraying / for roller / for wiping' — probably CFS1 / CFS3 / CFS4 in that order (our inference).

  • CFC3Additive
    % by weight: 200 %schedule

Roller-coating flat veneered panels under a UV system, 60-80 g/m².

Schedule names the CPS series, not CPS53. CFC3 appears nowhere else — probably the roller binder (CFS3). Confirm with Technocolor.

  • S90Thinner
    % by weight: 200 %schedule

    UV schedule, roller coater.

  • CPSAdditive
% by weight: intermixable, ratio not specified %catalog

For a custom shade: intermixes with other CPS colours (e.g. CPS51 classic walnut, CPS52 chestnut, CPS57 wenge to darken; names per dealer) and solvent-borne stains.

    Record ratios by weight.

Percentages are per 100 parts of component A.

Stir thoroughly — the pigment settles. Keep shaking/stirring the cup while you work. Lay one even wet coat, no puddles; go lighter on end grain (it drinks more and goes darker). To wipe: spray, give it 1-3 min, then wipe along the grain with a sponge or lint-free rag, packing pigment into the pores (pore-highlight effect on open-grain wood — needs solvent binder, CFS1/CFS4).

Cloth or pad

Wiping with a sponge or soft rag removes the excess after spraying (Technocolor's method definition). For a pore-highlight effect on oak/ash a solvent binder is needed (CFS1/CFS4 — the wiping code is not stated officially).

Roller coater (UV)

Flat parts on a roller-coater line only. In the official UV schedule the stain flashes 5 min at 20-25 °C before VTS20011 UV filler.

Brush

On exterior structures (fences, decks) it can be brushed on and wiped back with a rag.

Process and compatibility

Substrate preparation
Dry wood (8-12 % MC indoors, ≤ 15 % outdoors), sand P150-P180 (beech/birch up to P220 to avoid blotching), de-dust. Always do a test panel on the same species and grit.recommended
Goes under
PTS20 / PTL20 / VTS20011
Temperature and humidity
10-25 °C, RH ≤ 80 %, no direct sun or rainrecommended
Sanding
Never sand the stain itself — you'll cut through the colour. Sand only the first primer coat (P280-P320), and go easy on edges.recommended
