CLT9

Kromolux black wood dye (concentrate)

Concentrated transparent wood dye (stain) without binder, Kromolux series. Very even colour and high clarity; at higher strength gives deep dark tones while staying see-through. Reduce with water or solvent, with or without binder. Can be overcoated with polyester, polyurethane and nitrocellulose lacquers.

  • Staining any timber, veneer or solid
  • Furniture, mouldings, frames, general joinery — spray
  • Mixing/matching shades with the other CLT dyes — black to darken and knock back the saturation of any colour
  • Ebonising and deep dark tones (wenge, mocha, black oak) that keep the grain visible

Mixing matrix

  • S10Thinner
    % by weight: 500–1000 %official% by volume: 500–1000 %official

Fast, strong thinner — for close-grained timber (beech, birch, maple, alder), small parts, cool shop.

The Technocolor catalog gives the same 500–1000 % and the same S10/S12/S90 set for its universal dyes.

  • S12Thinner
    % by weight: 500–1000 %official% by volume: 500–1000 %official

Medium evaporation — for medium-pore timber; the all-round choice for hand spraying. Technocolor's stain schedules use S12.

The Technocolor catalog gives the same 500–1000 % and the same S10/S12/S90 set for its universal dyes.

  • S90Thinner
    % by weight: 500–1000 %official% by volume: 500–1000 %official

Slow — for open-pore timber (oak, ash, anegre), big panels, hot weather; gives the stain time to soak into the pores, fewer stripes and lap marks.

The Technocolor catalog gives the same 500–1000 % and the same S10/S12/S90 set for its universal dyes.

  • WATERThinner
    % by weight: 500–1000 %official% by volume: 500–1000 %official

Water-borne stain: raises the grain more and pops the figure, but dries slowly (up to 8 h).

Deionised water only — tap water makes the dye flocculate and hurts colour stability (dealer note).

  • LZC97Thinner
    % by weight: 500–1000 %official% by volume: 500–1000 %official

Used as a coupling solvent alongside the main thinner (solvent or water) — per the Milesi TDS it normally goes in with the main thinner, not on its own.

Dealer does not list LZC97 for CLT9; it is on the official CLT9 page and in the TDS.

  • LZC97 / LZC1000Thinner
    % by weight: 1 : 0.5 : 9.5 (CLT : LZC97 : LZC1000) = 1000 % total parts (TDS gives plain parts, weight/volume basis not stated)datasheet

    Manufacturer's (Milesi) suggested solvent dilution.

LZC1000 (and LZC1024, LTC5 from the TDS thinner list) not found in the Technocolor range; nearest by purpose is S10/S12.

  • LZC97 / WATERThinner
    % by weight: 1 : 1 : 14 (CLT : LZC97 : water) = 1500 % total parts (TDS gives plain parts, weight/volume basis not stated)datasheet

    Manufacturer's suggested water dilution.

    Deionised water.

  • CFS1Additive
    % by weight: 0–200 %official% by volume: 0–200 %official

Solvent-based spray binder: less grain raising, the primer doesn't drag the dye, more even colour on end grain.

    Binder-free (0 %) is allowed — official CLT9 page: CFS1/CFH1 0–200 %. The dealer table swaps the solvent/water labels; Technocolor schedules pair CFS1 with solvent S12, so CFS1 is the solvent-borne binder.

  • CFH1Additive
    % by weight: 0–200 %official% by volume: 0–200 %official

Water-based spray binder — when CLT9 is reduced with water.

    Don't put CFH1 into a solvent-reduced batch.

  • CFS1 / S12Additive
    % by weight: CLT9 100 : CFS1 150–200 : S12 500 parts by weight %

Working dye+binder mix under a PU/UV system, mirroring Technocolor's schedules for the CTU transparent dyes.

The 'panel doors PU' (CTU 100 : CFS1 200 : S12 500) and 'mouldings/frames UV' (CTU 100 : CFS1 150 : S12 500) schedules name CTU, not CLT; CLT9 is the same class (transparent concentrate, same thinners and spread rate).

Percentages are per 100 parts of component A.

Process and compatibility

Substrate preparation
Sand veneer P150–P220, solid P150–P180 (Technocolor stain schedules); de-dust. Coarser grit = more uptake and a darker tone, finer = lighter; end grain always goes darker (CFS1 binder helps). For water-reduced stain, raise the grain with water first and knock it back at P220.schedule
Goes over
bare wood / primer — solvent-reduced dye only (stated on the official page of the sister CTU universal dye, not in the CLT TDS)
Goes under
polyester primers/lacquers / PU primers/lacquers / acrylic (2K) primers / NC lacquers / UV primers (per Technocolor UV schedules for analogous dyes)
Sanding
Never sand the dye coat itself — you'll cut through the colour. Knock down the fibres on the first primer coat.
Temperature and humidity
20 °C, 70 % RH referencedatasheet
Don'ts
  • Don't reduce with tap water — deionised only
  • Don't put CFH1 (water binder) into a solvent-reduced batch
  • Don't prime over water-reduced stain until dry (8 h at 20 °C minimum)
  • Don't sand the stain coat
  • Don't spray the neat concentrate — blotches and stripes
  • Don't try to hit full black in one wet pass — build it in 2 light passes or it blotches and buries the grain

Safety: Solvent-based concentrate: flammable; spray in a booth with extraction, wear an A-filter respirator and nitrile gloves. Stains skin and clothes badly. (general practice — no SDS found)
