S70
S70 Slow thinner (for PU)
Slow-evaporating thinner for two-pack PU and acrylic finishes. Low evaporation rate, medium solvency. Made for dead-matt and high-gloss PU and acrylic lacquers and enamels: it keeps the film open longer so it flows out, levels better and gives less orange peel and dry overspray. On the official product pages of ATL500, PTL500, PPL200 and PPL500, and in the catalog for PTL202, S70 is the only thinner listed (the catalog also allows S80 for ATL500, PPL200 and PPL500).
- Thinning 100-gloss PU and acrylic lacquers and enamels
- Thinning dead-matt PU and acrylic finishes
- Warm shops and large flat panels where you need a longer wet edge
- Topcoats where flow-out and no dry overspray matter

Characteristics
- Evaporation rate

- Solvency
- mediumcatalog
- Position in range
- S13/S30 fast → S31/S50 medium → S70/S80 slow (low evaporation) → S100 very slow (retarder); S90 is also low-evaporation but for stains onlyrecommended
- Effect on cure
- does not change the 2K cure chemistry; dust-free time and time-to-sand get a bit longer, especially on thick or cool coatsrecommended
- Temperature effect
- viscosity drops as temperature rises and is adjusted by adding thinner; measured with a flow cup (Ford type, 2/4/6/8 mm orifice) in secondsofficial
Application
HVLP
- Nozzle
- unchanged - pick the nozzle for the host lacquer/enamel (e.g. 1.3-1.5 mm thin clear acrylic/PU gloss, 1.7-2.0 mm high-solids primers and gloss enamels)recommended
- Spray viscosity
- thin the host product to its working viscosity, typically 18-22 s DIN4 / VZ-4 at 20 °C for HVLP/conventional, within the % the host datasheet allowsrecommended
- Flash-off
- allow ~25-50 % longer flash-off between wet-on-wet passes than with S50recommended
On vertical work lay thinner passes with S70, or blend with S50 where the host datasheet allows it: slow solvent raises sag risk. Longer open time also means more dust pickup outside a clean booth.
Conventional spray
- Pressure · air
- per host product, usually 2.5-3.5 bar at the gun for conventionalrecommended
As for HVLP: nozzle and pressure follow the host product; S70 helps against dry overspray at higher atomising pressure.
Airmix (air-assisted airless)
- Nozzle
- per host product (typically 09-11 thou / 0.23-0.28 mm tips for 2K lacquers)recommended
- Pressure · fluid
- per host product, typically 60-100 barrecommended
Tip and fluid pressure follow the host product; S70 extends flow-out on warm-shop line work.
Process and compatibility
- Temperature and humidity
- choose S70 above ~23-25 °C, on large flat panels and for gloss topcoats; at 15-20 °C or on vertical work use S50 (where allowed) or a S50/S70 blendrecommended
- Don'ts
- Do not exceed the thinning % given for the host product (cuts solids, hiding and film build)
- Do not use S70 with polyester, nitro or waterborne products - Technocolor lists it for none of them
- Do not lay heavy coats on verticals with S70 without a sag test
- Do not thin the hardener on its own - add thinner to the A + hardener mix
Storage
- Packaging

Safety: Flammable organic-solvent blend. Use in a ventilated spray booth with an A2 organic-vapour respirator and nitrile gloves; keep tightly closed away from flames and sparks.
