water-based dye (CTH + CFH1 spray binder) under 2K solvent-borne polyurethane: high-solids clear PU primer PTS60 ×2 (legacy hardener C26 → PC25) + PU worktop lacquer PTL61 ×1 (→ PTL60 SM) with yellowing-resistant hardener (legacy C61 → PC60), slow thinner S70 and 0.5 % CTS lacquer tint

Finishing beech-veneered worktops (PU)

Substrate
Beech-veneered worktops / table tops (veneered face, solid or lipped edges)
Result
Stained beech with visible grain and even, blotch-free colour; a clear, hard PU film with semi-closed pores, satin (≈ 30 gloss), resistant to scratches, coffee and household cleaners.
  1. 01

    Sanding the face

    Abrasive: P150, P180, P220

Sanding the beech-veneered face. Don't linger at P150 on veneer — it sands through easily. Finishing at P220 gives an even, not-too-dark take-up of the water stain (official wood-prep page: finer grit = lighter tone).

  2. 02

    Sanding the edges

    Abrasive: K60, K80

Worktop edges (usually solid lipping) — remove cutter marks and overhangs. K60–K80 sponges are coarse: edges only, never on the veneered face.

    Staining

    Consumption
    80–100official

Working solution: 100 parts CTH concentrate (colour to sample) + 400 parts CFH1 binder + 1000 parts water. The binder evens out the colour on beech (less blotching) and holds the dye. Spray evenly wet-on-wet, no puddles; do the edges in the same pass.

    Drying

Drying: [object Object] °C, 20 min

The water stain must be fully dry before the PU primer; the raised grain is cut back when the first primer coat is sanded (step 7).

Mix: PTS60 100 + C26 (today PC25) 50 + S50 20 by weight; stir, stand 5–10 min, strain. A hard, high-solids primer — fills beech pores and resists shrink-back. Spray an even cross-coat; edges first and light. Coat 1 locks the water stain in — don't flood it or the colour can move.

  6. 06

    Drying

    Drying: [object Object] °C, 1.5 h

Forced dry at 30–35 °C. Flash off 10–15 min at room temperature first to avoid solvent popping. At 20 °C the primer is sandable only after ≈ 4 h (dealer).

  7. 07

    Sanding the face

    Abrasive: P240, P280, P320

Sand the primer without cutting through to the stain (that leaves light patches). Removes the grain raised by the water stain. De-dust.

  8. 08

    Sanding the edges

    Abrasive: K120

Light sponge sanding of the primed edges — careful on arrises, where the primer is thinnest.

    Abrasive: K120

As step 8. De-dust the whole panel thoroughly before the topcoat.
