HardenersHardener

PC20

PC20 hardener for PU coatings

Aromatic (isocyanate) hardener with fairly high reactivity and drying speed. The main second component for Technocolor polyurethane primers (clear and pigmented) and matt/satin PU lacquers. Compared with PC25 it gives a more elastic film but dries slightly slower. The catalogue puts it in the aromatic group for PU primers and matt lacquers; on yellowing resistance it ranks third from the bottom of ten (better than PC72 and PC10, worse than PC90, PC25, PC60 and the aliphatics). For white and pale finishes where colour stability matters Technocolor offers PC60 instead.

  • second component of clear PU primers: PTS20, PTS50, PTS50 A, PTS52, PTS60, PTS20700, PTS21812, PTS10, PTS01
  • second component of pigmented PU primers: PPS10, PPS20, PPS40, PPS40091, PPS50, PPS50277, PPS01
  • second component of matt and satin PU lacquers: PTL10, PTL20, PTL50, PTL80, PTL01, PTL1 converter
  • ready-made PPL R**** M PU enamels and PPL01 fire-retardant enamel

Slow thinners for PTL50 lacquers (S70 also for PTS52) — in hot weather and on large flat panels.

S80 is slower than S50: more dust pick-up and sag risk; it does not change cure time.

Why ru

The hardener is not sprayed on its own — nozzle and pressure follow the mixed base. Airmix/airless for the thixotropic PTS50/PTL50/PPS50 (turquoise icon in the catalogue): 0.009–0.013" tip (0.23–0.33 mm), 60–100 bar fluid, 1–2 bar atomising air.

Process and compatibility

Mixing
Weigh: base (part A) 100, then PC20 at the base's dose, stir, then thinner (% of part A). Let it stand 5–10 min and strain through 125–190 µm. Pot life 3–4 h at 20 °C — only mix what you'll spray in that time.recommended
Temperature and humidity
18–25 °C, RH no higher than 70 %; in humid air the isocyanate reacts with water — expect blushing and micro-bubbles.recommended
Don'ts
  • don't eyeball the dose: too little gives a soft film, too much gives brittleness and yellowing
  • don't use it under white or pale finishes where yellowing matters — use PC60
  • not for gloss lacquers/enamels (use AC200/PC210) or acrylic materials (AC40/AC41)
  • don't leave the can open — it picks up moisture from the air and goes cloudy or gels
  • don't add it to polyester materials (EPS/ETS use their own EC1/EA1)

Safety: Contains isocyanates (including a volatile 'free' fraction) and organic solvents. Spray only in an extracted booth, wear an A2P2 carbon respirator (air-fed is better), nitrile gloves and goggles. Highly flammable — keep away from flames and sparks.
