PPS40042
PPS40042 PU primer for PU foam, yellow
Two-pack pigmented (yellow) polyurethane primer for preparing PU-foam mouldings (cast cornices, ornaments, carved decor) and MDF for coloured enamels. Good adhesion to PU foam and MDF, high solids. The yellow ground suits patina and shabby-chic work over warm or 'gilt' enamels: distressed edges show a warm tone rather than white. With the flexible C20041 hardener you get more flexibility and adhesion (flexible parts, difficult foam) at the cost of slower drying than with the standard C20040.
- priming PU-foam parts before coloured enamels
- priming MDF before coloured enamels
- flexible parts and difficult PU foam (with C20041 hardener)
- warm ground under CQS patina and distressing

Mixing matrix
- C20040Hardener% by weight: 20 %catalog% by volume: 30 %recommended
Standard series hardener (named by the dealer on the PPS40042 page). Normal drying speed.
Fixed ratio, by weight. The dealer's component table leaves the hardener row out — 20 % comes from the 2019 catalogue and the PPU schedule. Current code may be PC20042 — check with the supplier.
- C20041Hardener% by weight: 20 %catalog% by volume: 30 %recommended
Flexible parts and difficult PU foam: more flexibility and better adhesion to the substrate.
Replaces C20040, never added on top. Dries slower than with standard C20040 — allow longer before sanding.
- S50Thinner% by weight: 20–30 (typ. 25) %dealer% by volume: 40–50 %dealer
Universal thinner; the default.
Dealer: stir thoroughly before use; ratios are parts by weight. Default 25 % is mid-range.
- S50Thinner% by weight: 30 %schedule
Official 'Finishing PU-foam products' schedule recipe: primer 100 : C20040 20 : S50 30, 150 g/m² (the schedule names the white PPS20040).
- PC20042Hardener% by weight: 20 %official% by volume: 30 %official
Primary option per the official page and catalog (series-specific hardener for PU foam). Not named by the dealer for PPS40042.
Weigh it - fixed ratio, not a range.
- PC20Hardener% by weight: 25 %official% by volume: 35 %official
Universal aromatic PU hardener; per the dealer, with PC20 at 25 % the primer wets MDF and veneer very well, raises minimal grain and resists shrinkage. Not named by the dealer for PPS40042.
Best pick when priming MDF/veneer rather than PU foam.
- S80Thinner% by weight: 20–30 %recommended
Only in heat (above ~25 °C) or on big flat panels, in place of S50.
Not listed by the maker for this primer - test panel first.

- Don'ts
- Don't prime PU foam without degreasing - release agent kills adhesion
- Don't mix more than you'll spray in 3 h
- Don't thin past 30 % - build drops and shrinkage rises
- Don't sand before 3-4 h - paper clogs
- No water, no acrylic hardeners
- Don't mix C20040 and C20041 in one batch — pick one

Safety: Two-pack solvent-borne PU; the hardener contains isocyanates. Spray only in a ventilated booth with an A2P2 combination respirator (or supplied air), nitrile gloves and eye protection. Flammable - no flames or sparks.
