PolyurethanePrimer

PPS50

PPS50 white thixotropic PU primer

Two-pack white polyurethane primer, thixotropic, with high hiding power. Holds well on vertical surfaces without runs or sags, fills grain well, levels the surface and resists shrink-back. Cured with PC20 (the official site also lists PC60) at 50 % by weight, thinned with S50.

  • vertical surfaces
  • cots and chairs in various woods
  • MDF
  • finishing assembled pieces
  • base coat under coloured PU enamels
  • base under APL800XX metallic-effect enamel (special effects)

  • PC20Hardener
    % by weight: 50 %official% by volume: 70 %official

    standard hardener (aromatic)

Fixed ratio, don't eyeball it. Aromatic hardener yellows in light - irrelevant for a primer that gets topcoated.

  • PC60Hardener
    % by weight: 50 %official% by volume: 70 %official

alternative to PC20 (listed on the official site only)

PC60 is the non-yellowing, fast/hard hardener on the catalogue chart. Dealer and catalogue list PC20 only.

  • S50Thinner
    % by weight: 20–30 (typ. 25) %official% by volume: 35–50 %official

    universal, normal evaporation

S50 is the default thinner; it does not change cure time.

  • S80Thinner
    % by weight: 20–30 %recommended

heat above ~25 °C, large panels

Not listed by Technocolor. Even a thixotropic primer can sag on verticals with a slow thinner - don't pile it on.

Spray, 150 g/m². Use a 1.8-2.0 mm tip; 1.5 mm will not atomise it properly. Distance 15-20 cm, 50 % overlap.

Conventional spray

The official sheet just says 'spray'. Transfer efficiency is low (up to 40 % per the methods page).

Not listed by Technocolor, but a normal way to shoot primers in production.

Airless

Not listed by Technocolor. High transfer (up to 90 %), but thixotropic primer levels poorly on flats - watch for orange peel.

Officially approved, 150 g/m². Best for chairs, legs and cots. Ground the work; wood below ~8 % moisture takes the charge poorly.

Process and compatibility

Substrate preparation
MDF: sand P180-P220; edges P240 and a second primer coat if they drink. Solid wood: P150-P180, de-dust. Wood moisture 8-12 %.recommended
Goes over
bare MDF / bare solid wood
Goes under
coloured PU enamels (PPL series, RAL) / APL80093 / APL80094 / APL80048
Sanding
280–320 grit Precommended
Don'ts
  • don't eyeball the hardener - it's 50 % by weight
  • don't use the mix past its 3-4 h pot life
  • don't sand before full dry (8 h) - it clogs the paper
  • don't flood horizontal panels - thixotropic primer levels poorly
