Copper decorative effect (metallised enamel)

Two-pack acrylic metallised enamel that gives a copper effect. Spray it over a primed panel; once dry (full dry 24 h), the metal particles are polished up through P320 to P1500 in steps to a deep metallic lustre. Patina it to age it and lacquer it with acrylic for protection. It is also the base coat for the Rust special effect (D100). For high-end finishing of furniture fronts and panels in various wood species and MDF.

Mixing matrix

  • AC40Hardener
    % by weight: 20 %dealer

    Always — fixed ratio.

20 by weight, 30 by volume (the base is heavy with metal, so the hardener's share by volume is higher). Weigh it — that's the reliable way.

  • S50Thinner
    % by weight: 20–30 (typ. 25) %dealer% by volume: 35–50 %dealer

Dealer's standard thinner; normal conditions and vertical work.

Towards 20 % for more build to polish into; towards 30 % for smoother lay-down through HVLP.

  • S80Thinner

Above ~25 °C or on big panels.

Slower — more risk of sags on verticals and of the metal particles floating unevenly.

Percentages are per 100 parts of component A.

Low pressure mist for D100

For the Rust effect: over the sanded enamel, spray D100 with LOW air pressure — the look depends on droplet size and how heavily you apply it. Then matt acrylic lacquer.

Primer sanding

Temperature and humidity

Don'ts
  • don't spray it without stirring thoroughly — the metal settles
  • don't polish before full cure (24 h)
  • don't cut through to the primer — leave enough film
  • don't leave it unlacquered — bare metal effect wears and tarnishes
  • don't change the AC40 ratio — 20 % by weight (30 % by volume), fixed
