PTS50

PTS50 clear thixotropic PU primer

Two-pack clear thixotropic polyurethane primer. Fast drying, high solids (official site). The catalog adds: very good sag and run resistance, good clarity, elasticity and shrink resistance, flows out well on vertical surfaces. Dealer: suits carved work, balusters, grilles and chairs.

  • vertical surfaces
  • chairs and cots in various species
  • assembled pieces
  • carvings, balusters, grilles
  • sealer under PTL50 PU lacquer over stained beech (chair-finishing schedule)

  • PC25 / PC20Hardener
    % by weight: 50 %official% by volume: 50 %official

    always, fixed 50 %. Official: PC25/PC20; dealer lists PC25; catalog: PC20, PC25.

Both are aromatic hardeners for PU primers (catalog p.19). PC25 sits at the far left of the chart (fast/hard), PC20 just to its right; PC25 is slightly more yellowing-resistant than PC20, but both yellow with age — keep in mind on pale timber under clear coats.

  • S50Thinner
    % by weight: 20–25 %official% by volume: 20–25 %official

standard thinner (medium evaporation); dealer and catalog agree

Weight and volume figures are identical in the official data.

  • C50Hardener
    % by weight: 50 %schedule

per the 'Beech chair finishing (PU)' schedule

Code C50 appears nowhere else (not on the site or at the dealer) — probably a legacy hardener code. Use PC25/PC20 at 50 %.

  • S80Thinner
    % by weight: 20 %schedule

per the chair schedule (forced drying at 30–35 °C); S80 is the slow thinner, for heat and large pieces

Slow thinner raises sag risk; the thixotropy offsets it.

Percentages are per 100 parts of component A.

Gun 15–20 cm from the surface, 50 % overlap, fan fully open. Thixotropic — on a 1.5 mm tip you get dry spray and poor build.

Don'ts
  • don't use it as the main sealer on big flat horizontal panels — thixotropic coatings flow out worse and can leave open pores or orange peel (official characteristics page)
  • don't use the mix past its 4 h pot life at 20 °C
  • don't sand while the paper still clogs — give it more time

Safety: 2K PU: the hardener contains isocyanates. Spray in a booth, wear a carbon respirator (A2P2/A2P3) or air-fed mask, gloves and goggles. Flammable. Don't seal leftover mixed material. (General PU practice; no SDS found.)
