PPL50 SM

PPL50 SM White thixotropic PU enamel, semi-matt (30 gloss)

Two-pack white polyurethane semi-matt enamel (30 gloss), thixotropic. Excellent hiding, resists runs and sags, good physical and chemical resistance. Made as a topcoat for vertical spraying and for carved, complex-shaped parts.

  • Topcoat on vertical surfaces (fronts, doors, panels)
  • Carvings and complex-shaped parts
  • Furniture fronts and panels in wood and MDF
  • Interior use only

    % by weight: 50 %official% by volume: 60 %official

the only listed hardener — always

    Fixed ratio, 50 % by weight (2:1) — weigh it. PC60 is aliphatic, yellowing-resistant group, 29 ± 1 % solids.

  • S50Thinner
    % by weight: 20–30 (typ. 25) %official% by volume: 30–35 %official

default — normal evaporation, vertical work

S50: medium evaporation, good solvency; catalog lists it for PU primers, matt lacquers and enamels. Thinner does not change cure time.

  • S50 / S70Thinner
    % by weight: 20–30 %catalog

S70 (slow) — catalog alternative. Use it in heat above ~25 °C and on large panels — our recommendation; the catalog gives no conditions.

Official page and dealers list S50 only; S70 appears only in the catalog (S70: slow evaporation, for deep-matt and high-gloss PU/acrylic materials). No % by volume published for S70. Slow thinner lengthens dust time and sag risk; the thixotropy offsets part of that.

  • S100Thinner
    % by weight: 5–10 %recommended

only in heat when the enamel goes on dry

Recommendation only, not Technocolor data for PPL50.

Fan fully open, 50–75 % overlap, 10–13 CFM compressor. On verticals one full wet pass — the thixotropy holds it; don't exceed 150 g/m² per pass. Never sand or polish the final 30-gloss coat — the sheen goes patchy.

The catalog shows only the orange (spray) icon for PPL50; the turquoise (airmix/airless) icon appears e.g. on PPS50. Technocolor's methods page says airmix suits topcoats better than airless — acceptable as a production method.

Airless

Not recommended for the topcoat: coarser atomisation, uneven sheen, overbuild.

Process and compatibility

Substrate preparation
White PU primer (PPS20/PPS50/PPS50277) sanded P280–P320 (P320–P400 on MDF), de-dusted, free of silicone, oil and wax. Resinous wood and MDF: PTS71 isolator first.recommended

Sanding
P320–P400 between coats; never sand or polish the final coat.recommended
Temperature and humidity
18–25 °C, RH 50–70 %. Above 25 °C use S70 instead of S50.recommended
Don'ts
  • No hardener other than PC60
  • Weigh the hardener, don't eyeball it
  • Don't exceed 150 g/m² per pass
  • Don't sand or polish the final 30-gloss coat
  • Interior only
  • Don't spray mix older than its 4 h pot life
  • Stir the base thoroughly before use (dealer)
