S31 Thinner

Technocolor medium-evaporation thinner with good thinning power. Catalog and dealer list it for polyurethane, acrylic and UV materials. The official ETL200 polyester lacquer page and the catalog also allow it as one of the ETL200 thinners (S10/S11/S31/S50, 10–15 % by weight). The official S31 page on t-color.ru exists but carries no characteristics text.

    ETL200 PE gloss lacquer (official mix: EC1/EC2 2 %, EA1 2 %, thinner S10/S11/S31/S50 10–15 %).

The current ETL200 dealer card at t-colormarket.ru lists only S10/S11 — S31 is backed by the official page and the catalog.

As a medium-speed stand-in for S50 in PU/acrylic/UV materials unless the Technocolor technologist says otherwise.

Test on a sample board first — there is no official per-product compatibility table for S31 with specific PU/acrylic codes.

Percentages are per 100 parts of component A.

Drying · Effect
PE pot life/gel/drying (ETL200) are governed by EC1/EC2 and EA1 dosing (dealer: EC1 up to 3 % / EA1 up to 3 % to speed up; EA1 down to 1–1.5 % to extend pot life), not by the thinnerdealer

Application

Conventional spray

Nozzle
1.6–1.8 (conventional/HVLP) for ETL200recommended
Pressure · air
2.5–3.5 conventional inlet; HVLP 2.0–2.2 inlet / ≤0.7 at caprecommended
Spray viscosity
≈15–20 s DIN4 at 20 °C (ETL200 after 10–15 % S31)recommended

S31 is never sprayed on its own. For ETL200 (official): S31 10–15 % by weight / 15–20 % by volume, EA1 2 %, EC1/EC2 2 %; spray 150–200 g/m². Mixing order (A + EA1 → S31 → EC1/EC2 just before spraying; never mix accelerator and catalyst directly) is standard PE practice, not stated on the official page.

HVLP

Nozzle
1.3–1.5 clear PU/acrylic lacquers; 1.7–2.0 high-solids primersrecommended
Spray viscosity
18–22 s DIN4 at 20 °Crecommended
Pressure · air
2.0–2.2 inlet (trigger pulled), ≤0.7 at capworkshop

For PU/acrylic lacquers: viscosity and tip follow the base material; treat S31 like the medium-speed S50.

Airmix (air-assisted airless)

Nozzle
09–11 thou (0.23–0.28 mm) lacquers; 11–13 thou (0.28–0.33 mm) primersrecommended
Pressure · fluid
60–100recommended
Pressure · air
1.0–2.0recommended

Airmix/airless needs less thinner — use the low end of the base product's range.

Process and compatibility

Temperature and humidity
use at 18–25 °C; for PU/acrylic above ~25 °C or on large flat panels switch to a slow thinner (S70/S80). On ETL200 (PE) do not swap to S70/S80 — they are not listed for PE; adjust pot life/gel via EA1/EC1 instead (dealer note).recommended
Don'ts
  • Never spray S31 on its own — only as part of a mix.
  • Do not exceed the base product's stated thinner % — you lose film build.
  • On ETL200 do not use the thinner to control cure — EC1/EC2 and EA1 set the speed.

Storage

Packaging

Safety: Highly flammable liquid. Use with ventilation and an A-filter respirator, away from ignition sources; keep out of reach of children. (Generic precautions for organic thinners — no Technocolor SDS found.)
