LOB5 Slow hardener for polyester materials

Slow hardener (initiator) for the Milesi polyester materials Technocolor sells under its own codes, mainly the LRR16 white PE primer. It slows the cure and gives an even through-cure across the whole film, so you reach for it in a cold shop, for heavy builds, and whenever you need a longer pot life. It's the slow counterpart of the standard LOB810 hardener and goes in at the same 2 %.

  • Curing LRR16 white PE primer (official: 'LOB810/LOB5', 2 %)
  • Low application temperatures (dealer: 'suitable for low-temperature application conditions')
  • Applying a thick coat of material
  • Extending the pot life of the mix (dealer); in practice big batches, hot weather, airmix/airless

instead of LOB810: cold shop, heavy build, longer pot life needed

The LRR16 official page lists 'LOB810/LOB5' — one or the other, never both. Order of addition (derived, standard PE practice): accelerator → stir → thinner → LOB5 last, right before spraying.

  • LRA52base

  • EPS20 / EPS22 / ETS20 / ETL200 / EC1 / EC2 / EA1do_not_mix

don't use LOB5 with Technocolor's own PE line — those run on their own EC1/EC2 hardener + EA1 accelerator system

EC2 is Technocolor's own slow hardener — same job as LOB5. LOB5 compatibility with EPS/ETS products is unconfirmed.

Application

Mixing component

Why ru
Соотношение официальное (страница LRR16); порядок введения, точность дозировки и предупреждение о пероксиде/ускорителе — стандартная практика работы с ненасыщенными полиэфирами.

LOB5 is never applied on its own. Add it last (after accelerator and thinner), 2 % on the base, mix thoroughly and use straight away. Weigh it, or dose with a syringe/graduated pipette — at 2 % a couple of grams per kilo already shifts the cure. Never mix hardener and accelerator directly with each other — violent reaction.

Conventional spray

Consumption
200official
Nozzle
2.0–2.5 mm gravity gun; pressure-pot 1.5–1.8 mmrecommended
Pressure · air
2.5–3.5 bar at the inlet, trigger pulled (conventional); HVLP 2.0–2.5 bar inlet, ≤ 0.7 bar at the caprecommended
Pressure · fluid
pressure pot 1.0–2.0 barrecommended

With LOB5 the mix stays sprayable longer in the cup — handy on big runs, but it also stays wet longer: more dust pick-up and, with heavy coats, more sag risk on verticals.

Airmix (air-assisted airless)

Nozzle
tip 0.013–0.017 in (≈ 0.33–0.43 mm), 40–50° fan; fluid 60–100 bar, atomising air 1.5–2.5 barrecommended
Why ru
Катализированный ПЭ, загустевший в насосе или шланге, выводит их из строя; медленный инициатор даёт необходимый запас времени.

On airmix/airless pick LOB5 over LOB810 and flush the pump and hose with S10 before the pot life runs out.

Process and compatibility

Temperature and humidity
for ≈15–18 °C or heavy builds; don't apply PE below ~15 °C material/workpiece temperature even with LOB5recommended
Don'ts
  • Never mix LOB5 with LOB828/LOB6AA1 accelerator directly — only via the base
  • Don't add LOB5 together with LOB810 — they're alternatives
  • Don't go past 2 % without a test panel — overdosing shortens the pot life (defeating the point of a slow hardener) and adds brittleness and yellowing
  • Don't use with Technocolor's own PE line (EPS/ETS/ETL) — those use EC1/EC2 + EA1

Storage

Packaging
t-colormarket: sold per kg (2 700 ₽/kg); Holzcom: 1 L can, art. LOB5/1 («Milesi 1 л», «Объём: 1»)dealer
Storage temperature
cool, dark, below ~25 °C, away from heat and sunlight; stored separately from the acceleratorrecommended

Safety: Organic peroxide: oxidiser, irritant/corrosive to skin and eyes. Wear gloves and goggles. Store away from the cobalt accelerator, keep away from metal swarf, rust and combustibles. Soak up spills with inert material (sand), not sawdust or rags.
