CQS42A

CQS42A Silver patina (metallic, solvent-borne)

Silver metallic solvent-borne patina. Sprayed over sanded PU or acrylic primer/enamel; after 5–10 minutes the excess is wiped back by hand with Scotch-Brite or steel wool so the silver stays in the pores, profile recesses and on the edges, giving an aged / decapé look with a metallic shimmer. Fast-drying, easy to wipe back, very low consumption. Must be top-coated with clear lacquer.

  • Ageing (patinating) indoor furniture and wooden items
  • Silver in the pores of open-pore oak (decapé)
  • Patina over enamel on raised-panel and carved doors
  • Finishing PU-foam / polystone mouldings, frames, décor
  • Ageing APL800XX metallic enamel
  • Desert Rose effect (over crystallised HTL10001)
  • Restoration work (CQS70 42001 aerosol)

Standard reduction for spraying (official CQS42A and CQS42 pages, dealer).

Dealer: S10 dries faster and gives a harder film; S2000 (dedicated patina thinner, low aggressiveness) dries slightly slower but wipes/sands back more easily. Ease of removal is tuned with the thinner. 2019 catalog: S10 = 'normal removal', for decapé; S2000 = 'good removal', for PU foam; 100–200 %.

  • S10Thinner
    % by weight: 0–200 %dealer% by volume: 0–200 %dealer

CQS42410 'champagne' only — dealer allows it neat (0 %).

With little thinner it lays down heavier and is harder to wipe back.

  • S10 / S2000Thinner
    % by weight: 100–300 %catalog

Wider range from the 2025–2026 catalog — for a lighter, sheerer patina.

Catalog doesn't say weight or volume. S10: 'fast, strong solvency… patinas'; S2000: 'fast evaporation, low aggressiveness — patinas'.

t-color.ru schedules: decapé oak (acr.), open-pore oak doors (acr.), PU-foam items (PU).

1:1 with S10; 80–100 g/m² (decapé, PU foam; the open-pore schedule gives no rate).

  • S13Thinner

Alternative per the catalog thinner table (S13 — fast, 'stains, patinas…').

Not named for CQS42 specifically; no ratio given — use as S10 (100–200 %).

Shake/stir before filling and keep agitating — metallic flake settles. Lay a light even wet coat, filling pores and recesses; don't flood. After 5–10 min wipe back with Scotch-Brite (07448 / S UFN, dealer says K600) or No.2 steel wool.

Officially 'spray + rub': after spraying, the excess is rubbed back by hand with Scotch-Brite or steel wool.

CQS70 42001 'silver' aerosol (2019 catalog; Restoration leaflet: CQS70 coloured/metallic, tinted to order in batches of ≥24 cans) — for touch-up and small jobs.

Process and compatibility

Substrate preparation
Over cured, sanded PU/acrylic primer or enamel. Dealer instructions for CQS42A: sand P80–120 → APS20 primer 120 g/m², 4 h → sand P280–320 → APL20 SM enamel 120 g/m², 3 h → patina. t-color schedules: APS20/APL20 or ATS20 on oak (P240–P320 + pads), PPS20040 + PPL20 on PU foam (K120 pads).dealer

APS20 / PPS20 / APL20 / APL20 SM / ATS20 / PPL20 / RAL/NCS PU or acrylic enamels / ATL20 SM (in the APL800XX metallic-enamel scheme) / HTL10001
Sanding
Excess is taken back by hand with abrasive pads: Scotch-Brite 07448 / S UFN (schedules), K600 (dealer) or No.2 steel wool (PU-foam schedule). Special-effects catalog: once dry the patina is 'sanded back', staying in pores, recesses and on edges. Avoid sandpaper on the patina — it cuts through the enamel easily (advice, not sourced).schedule
Temperature and humidity
20–25 °C for application and flash.schedule
Don'ts
  • Don't leave it without clear lacquer — it isn't a topcoat; the silver will rub off and tarnish.
  • Don't spray over uncured or unsanded primer/enamel — it grabs everywhere and won't wipe back.
  • Don't wait too long before wiping: past ~10 min it gets harder, especially with S10.
  • Don't flood it — 80–100 g/m² is the already-reduced wet amount.
  • Keep it stirred — the metallic flake settles and the shade drifts.
