PU sealer (PTS71+PC72) → polyester primer ×2 (EPS20+EA1+EC1) → 2K PU gloss enamel (PPL200+AC200) → polished

High-gloss finish for MDF bathroom fronts (PE + PU)

Substrate
MDF (bathroom furniture fronts, including routed ones)
Result
Opaque high-gloss enamel (white or tinted to RAL/NCS), 100 gloss, polished to a mirror finish over a thick, non-shrinking polyester primer.
  1. 01

    Sanding the MDF

    Abrasive: P150, P180, P220

Prepare the raw MDF going P150 → P180 → P220 in order. Don't skip a grit, or the coarser scratches will telegraph through the gloss. De-dust before the sealer.

  2. 02

    Sanding edges and profiles

    Abrasive: K60, K80

K60/K80 mats are for routed detail, edges and anywhere the belt can't reach. The 'K' grading is copied from the schedule; Technocolor gives no P-scale equivalent. Routed MDF edges soak up far more than the face, and they're exactly what the next sealer coat locks down.

    Consumption
    80–100

A thin barrier coat: it wets out and seals the MDF so the heavy polyester primer doesn't sink into the board and edges unevenly. Only 21 % solids - it's a seal, not a build coat.

    Drying: 20-25 °C, 40 min

Goes straight under the polyester primer without sanding. Dealer: recoat without sanding after 40-60 min - 40 min is the minimum; in a cool shop give it closer to an hour.

White polyester build primer: almost everything sprayed stays on the panel and it barely shrinks back - this is what makes the mirror flat. Pot life is about 20 minutes, so mix only enough for a pass or two.

    Warm drying

  9. 09

    Cure before sanding

    Drying: 20-25 °C, 12 h

Matches the dealer's 12 h to sanding for EPS20 at 20 °C. Sanding sooner clogs the paper and leaves pits.

  10. 10

    Sanding the primer

    Abrasive: P240, P280, P320

Level the PE primer flat: P240 → P280 → P320. Don't cut through to the sealer on the edges.

  11. 11

    Pad-sanding profiles

    Abrasive: K150, K180

K150/K180 mats on routed detail and edges; then de-dust thoroughly - every speck shows under gloss.

The 100-gloss finish coat. Slow S80 gives maximum flow-out, which matters for gloss that will be polished. Spray in a clean booth, one full wet coat.

  14. 14

    Cure before polishing

    Drying: 20-25 °C, 72 h

Technocolor's own definition: polishing only after full dry. The dealer gives 12 h full dry for PPL200, but the schedule asks for 72 h before polishing so the film reaches full hardness - otherwise the gloss dies back after a few days.

  15. 15

    Polishing

    3M Finesse-it (Product)

    Abrasive: 3M Finesse-it 81820, 3M 06002 (особо тонкая / extra fine)

Polish to a mirror with 3M Finesse-it pastes. Nibs and orange peel are normally wet-sanded out first at P1500-P3000 - the schedule doesn't say so (derived).

Hiding power
high («высокая укрывная способность», incl. corners and edges)official
Hardness
high - hard PE primer + PU enamel with «excellent strength»; no pencil (ASTM D3363) or pendulum (ISO 1522) figures publishedcatalog
Elasticity
low-medium overall: ~250 µm of hard unsaturated polyester is the brittle part; the thin, flexible PTS71/PC72 layer underneath and the medium-hard AC200 enamel on top only partly buffer itrecommended
Adhesion
good on MDF via PTS71 («отличная адгезия к разным типам древесины»); intercoat adhesion PU→PE and PE→PU secured by the schedule itself: PE over PTS71 within 40 min-1 h unsanded, PU enamel only over PE sanded P240-P320official
Wear resistance
not published - expect good for vertical fronts (hard, thick system); no Taber datarecommended
Chemical resistance
high («физико-химическая стойкость»), which is what the bathroom use needs: water, cleaning agents, cosmeticsofficial
Lightfastness
good: AC200 ranks 8 of 10 for non-yellowing on the catalog hardener chart (only AC41/AC40 better). The yellowing-prone PC72 in the sealer is buried under opaque enamel, so it doesn't showcatalog
Drying
dust/touch: PTS71 40 min (schedule), EPS20 40 min to touch / 12 h to sanding (dealer), PPL200 1 h touch / 12 h full (dealer); system ready to polish 72 h after enamelofficial
Thixotropy
none of the three is thixotropic - fine for flat fronts, risk of sags on vertical sprayingcatalog
