PC72 Hardener for PU coatings

Aromatic isocyanate hardener for two-pack polyurethane and nitro-urethane finishes. On the catalog hardener chart it sits at the extreme slow/elastic end (alongside the acrylic hardener AC40) — the slowest and most flexible of the PC polyurethane hardeners: good adhesion and high gloss in gloss lacquers, but also the most prone to yellowing. Used in PU isolating and adhesion primers (PTS71, PTS72), PU gloss lacquers (PTL202 for funeral goods; PTL500 as an alternative to AC200), and as a 'flexible' alternative to PC20 in MDF primers (PTS21812, PPS50277).

  • Hardener for clear PU isolating and adhesion primers (PTS71, PTS72)
  • Hardener for PU gloss lacquers: PTL202 (funeral goods, gloss fronts) and PTL500 (alternative to AC200; because it yellows, best kept to dark/stained work)
  • Flexible alternative to PC20 in primers on poor MDF — less cracking on edges and routed profiles (PTS21812, PPS50277)
  • Second component for nitro-urethane finishes

Pot life
depends on the host product (dealer, 20 °C): 6 h PTS71, 6 h PTL202, 4 h PTS72 (all with PC72); 4 h PTL500 and 3 h PTS21812 / 3–4 h PPS50277 are for the dealer-listed AC200/PC210 resp. PC20 mixes, not PC72dealer

Application

HVLP

Nozzle
by host: 1.3–1.5 (PTS71/PTS72), 1.5–1.7 (PTL202/PTL500), 1.8–2.0 (PTS21812/PPS50277)recommended
Pressure · air
inlet 2.0–2.2 bar with trigger pulled, air cap ≤ 0.7 barrecommended
Spray viscosity
thin the A+PC72 mix with S50 (primers) or S70 (gloss lacquers) to ~18–22 s DIN4 for clear products; thixotropic/high-solids primers sprayed thickerrecommended

Weigh the hardener into the base, stir, then add thinner; let it stand 5–10 min and strain.

Airmix (air-assisted airless)

Nozzle
by host: 09–11 thou (0.23–0.28 mm) clear primers, 11–13 thou (0.28–0.33 mm) gloss lacquers / high-solids primers; fluid 60–100 bar, atomising air 1–2 barrecommended

Process and compatibility

Goes with

Thinners in mixes

Temperature and humidity
work at 18–25 °C, RH ≤ 70 %; below 18 °C the slow PC72 cure drags on noticeablyrecommended
Don'ts
  • Don't use it under white, pale or clear finishes on light timber unless topcoated — PC72 yellows the most
  • Don't swap PC72 for another hardener one-for-one — each has its own ratio
  • Don't leave the can open: air moisture ruins the hardener (goes cloudy, thickens)
  • Don't use it in acrylic (aliphatic) systems that list only AC40/AC41/AC200
  • Don't exceed the stated % — extra hardener doesn't speed drying, it makes the film brittle and yellow
