CQS21
CQS21 Patina, classic walnut
Solvent-borne patina in classic walnut for an aged look on interior furniture and woodwork. Sprayed over PU or acrylic primer/enamel; once it flashes off, the excess is cut back with steel wool or Scotch-Brite so the colour stays in the pores, recesses and on the edges. Fast drying, wipes back easily by hand, very low consumption.
- ageing/antiquing furniture, doors and interior woodwork
- decapé (limed-look) effect on enamelled oak — colour left in the pores
- open-pore oak over clear primer
- antiquing PU-foam (polyurethane) mouldings
- 'Blur' special effect — patina washed out with S10
- stone imitation — patina spattered onto enamel
- restoration work

Mixing matrix
- % by weight: 100–200 %official% by volume: 100–200 %official
Standard let-down per the official product page.
Dealer: 'patina is let down 1–2× with solvent'. S10 (SG 0.790, fast) — faster drying and a harder film; S2000 is the dedicated patina thinner (dealer: fast evaporation, low aggression); with it the patina dries slightly slower but sands back more easily.
- % by weight: 100–200 %dealer% by volume: 100–200 %dealer
Dealer (t-colormarket) listing for CQS21: S2000 / S13.
Dealer: 'thinned with ethanol the patina wipes off more easily, with S13 it is harder to remove'. S13 is the PE lacquer/stain thinner (SG 0.835, fast). The same dealer's CQS1 page and the official site list S10 instead of S13; the dealer's own CQS21 description text also recommends S10/S2000.
- % by weight: 100–300 %catalog
Wider range from the 2022 and 2025–26 catalogs — for a lighter, more transparent patina.
Catalogs don't say whether by weight or volume.
- ethanolThinner
When the patina needs to wipe back more easily (subtle effect, soft base coat).
Source is the dealer note; no percentage given — use the same 100–200 % as a starting point.
- S10Thinner% by weight: 100 %schedule
Technocolor schedules: PU-foam (over PPL20 enamel), oak decapé (over APL20 enamel), open-pore oak (over ATS20 primer).
All three schedules use the same 1:1.
- S10Thinner
'Blur' effect: enamel is covered with patina (CQS 21–26), then washed out with S10 sprayed at low pressure.
Not a mix component — a separate solvent pass.

Lay one even, thin wet coat, working it into profiles and pores; gun distance 15–20 cm. Avoid puddling in routed corners — excess there is hard to wipe back evenly.

After spraying and flash-off, the patina is rubbed back: #2 steel wool (PU foam) or Scotch-Brite 07448 S UFN (oak). More pressure = lighter result (practice). With the grain on flats; along profile ridges to highlight the edges (practice).
Low pressure blur
- Pressure · air
- 0.8–1.5 barrecommended
'Blur' effect: S10 is misted over the fresh patina with a low-pressure gun so the solvent washes the patina out. Topcoat ATL20 UM.
Process and compatibility
- Substrate preparation
- APL20 enamel (no sanding step between enamel and patina); open-pore oak — onto ATS20 clear primer sanded P240–P320 belt + K60/K80 mats.official
- Topcoat mixes in schedules
- PTL500 100 : C200 70 : S80 40, 150 g/m², dry 12 h, ATL20 100 : C40 20 : S50 40, 150 g/m², 1.5 h at 30–35 °C, ATL20 100 : C40 20 : S80 30 : CTS 0.5, 150 g/m², 1.5 h at 30–35 °C
- Sanding
- Excess is removed with steel wool #2 (PU foam) or Scotch-Brite 07448 S UFN (oak) after 5–10 min; special-effects catalog: patina is 'sanded after drying, leaving it in pores, recesses and on edges'; shabby-chic: selective sand-through with coarse abrasives after the patina. Dealer: S2000 makes the patina easier to sand.schedule
- Sanding before
- Open-pore oak: ATS20 clear primer sanded P240/P280/P320 belt + K60/K80 mats directly before the patina. PU-foam and decapé: no sanding between enamel (PPL20/APL20) and patina — K120 mats / P240–P320 are used on the primer, before the enamel.schedule
- Temperature and humidity
- 20–25 °C for patina application and dryingschedule
- Interior only
- yesdealer
- Don'ts
- not a finish on its own — always topcoat with clear lacquer
- don't apply over an uncured base coat (primer/enamel) — it will lift with the base
- not for exterior use
- don't flood it on — heavy patches wipe back unevenly
- don't wait too long to wipe back — after 5–10 min it gets harder to remove
Storage
Safety: Solvent-borne (S10/S2000): flammable — spray in a booth with extraction, wear an organic-vapour respirator and gloves. Don't pile up rags or steel wool with patina on them — soak or keep them in a closed metal bin.
