CQS19872

CQS19872 Patina, red walnut

Solvent-borne patina in a red-walnut shade. Sprayed over polyurethane or acrylic primers (and enamels), then the excess is rubbed back with steel wool or a Scotch-Brite pad, leaving colour in the pores, recesses and on profile edges. Dries fast, wipes back easily by hand, very low consumption; used to give indoor furniture and joinery an aged look.

  • Antique/aged effect on indoor furniture and joinery
  • Decapé finish over enamel on oak kitchen doors
  • Open-pore oak: colouring the pores over clear acrylic primer
  • Ageing polyurethane-foam (PU/PPU) mouldings and decor
  • Special effects: wash-out ('razmytie'), shabby chic, faux stone (dripped)

Dedicated patina thinner: fast evaporation, low aggressiveness – kinder to fresh acrylic/PU coats underneath.

    Also listed by the dealer (S2000 / S13, 100–200 %).

  • S13Thinner

Sanding between coats
Excess is removed by abrading back with Scotch-Brite 07448 S UFN (acrylic schedules) or steel wool No 2 (PU-foam schedule) after 5–10 min; the special-effects catalog describes this as 'sanding back after drying, leaving the patina in pores, recesses and on edges'. No separate sanding step between patina and lacquer in the schedules.schedule

Stir well before thinning and agitate the cup now and then – pigment settles. Check colour on a sample board with the same primer/enamel system.

Process and compatibility

Substrate preparation
Apply over cured, sanded acrylic or PU primer/enamel: decapé – APL20 enamel dried 1.5 h at 30–35 °C; open-pore oak – ATS20 primer dried 1.5 h at 30–35 °C and sanded P240–P320 / K60–K80; PU foam – PPL20 enamel dried 4 h at 20–25 °Cschedule
Goes over
ATS20 / APL20 / PPL20 / APL (RAL/NCS) enamel / PU (RAL/NCS) enamel / ATL20 SM
Sanding
Patina is not sanded as a separate operation; the excess is abraded back with Scotch-Brite 07448 S UFN or steel wool No 2 (schedules). For shabby chic, selective sand-through with coarse abrasive after the patina, before lacquer (special-effects catalog).schedule
Temperature and humidity
18–25 °C, RH 50–70 %recommended
Don'ts
  • Don't leave it too long before wiping back – thinned with S10 it grabs and wipes unevenly
  • Don't apply over uncured or unsanded primer/enamel – the solvent can lift it
  • Don't leave patina uncoated – it is not a finish
  • Don't overload (>100 g/m²)
