CTH3

CTH3 Water-based dye, red (concentrate)

Transparent, bright, water-reducible red dye concentrate. Gives rich, deep colours while keeping the wood figure visible. The CTH series resists settling, which makes it suited to production lines with dip cycles; CTH dyes can also be added to waterborne lacquers for low-emission products such as children's furniture and toys.

  • Spray dyeing of wood
  • Dip dyeing on production lines
  • Tinting waterborne lacquers
  • Tinting VTS20000 lacquer (first coat) in UV parquet finishing (5–10 %)
  • Tinting the HTL10001 'Frost' special effect
  • Base colour for mixing shades with the other CTH bases

  • WATERThinner
    % by weight: 500–600 %official% by volume: 500–600 %official

Working solution for spraying and dipping per the official product page.

Use clean, preferably soft/demineralised water; hard water can cause uneven tone.

  • WATERThinner
    % by weight: 500–1000 %catalog

Catalogue range for the CTH series: up to 1000 % for lighter tones.

More water = lighter, more even tone. 2022 catalogue: the CTH series can be diluted with water in any proportion.

  • CFH1 / WATERAdditive
    % by weight: CFH1 400 % + water 1000 %schedule

    Staining oak veneer/fronts under the open-pore acrylic system (PTS60 / PTL61).

CFH1 is a binder: it locks the dye in and reduces bleeding into the primer. 80–100 g/m², dry 20 min at 20–25 °C. The schedule page (slug 'beech-veneer worktops PU') actually shows open-pore finishing of oak kitchen fronts (acrylic).

  • CFH2 / WATERAdditive
    % by weight: CFH2 800 % + water 1200 %schedule

Dyeing beech chairs under the PU system (PTS50 / PTL50).

    80–100 g/m², dry 30 min at 20–25 °C.

  • VTS20000Additive
    % by weight: 5–10 %schedule

Tinting the first VTS20000 coat in UV parquet finishing (8–10 g/m², dry 5 min at 30–35 °C).

  • HTL10001Additive

Tinting the 'Frost' crystal effect (HTL10001 + CTH), then ATL20 SM clear.

Ratio not given — dial in on a test panel.

  • waterborne lacquerAdditive
    % by weight: start at 1–5 %; do not exceed ~10 %recommended

Additive to waterborne lacquers (children's furniture, toys).

Percentages are per 100 parts of component A.

The CTH series resists settling, so it works in dip tanks. Stir the tank periodically and watch concentration (water evaporates and the tone darkens). Let excess drain and wipe drips off end grain.

Process and compatibility

Substrate preparation
Sand P150–P180–P220 (edges/chairs with K60–K80 sponges per the schedules); raise the grain with water and denib at P220 before dyeing; remove dust.schedule
Goes over
bare sanded wood
Goes under
PTS60 / PTS50 / VTS20011 / ATL20 SM
Sanding
Never sand the dye itself; knock back the raised fibres after the first primer coat (P240–P320 / K120).recommended
Temperature and humidity
20–25 °C for dye drying; 30–35 °C forced dry for subsequent primerschedule
Don'ts
  • Don't prime over wet dye — streaking and poor adhesion.
  • Don't flood the dye on — blotches on end grain and in pores.
  • Don't use undiluted — the concentrate blotches and dries poorly.
Goes under: notes
In the UV parquet schedule CTH is mixed into VTS20000 (5–10 %); the next layer is VTS20011 filler, then VTS20015 primer. In the PTS60/PTS50 schedules the dye (with CFH1/CFH2 and water) is applied on its own under the primer.

Storage

Safety: Water-reducible. Wear gloves (dye stains skin); when spraying use a respirator and extraction. Protect from frost.
