ATL80018
Acrylic pearl-effect lacquer ("Mother-of-pearl")
Two-pack acrylic lacquer loaded with pearlescent pigment for decorative finishes. Sprayed as a thin effect coat over enamel to give a pearl shimmer; the coarse flake shows best over light-coloured grounds. The effect coat must be topcoated with a clear lacquer (the catalogue system uses ATL200 gloss). Thinner speed (fast/slow) and the way you spray it change how the effect looks.
- decorative pearl finish on furniture fronts and panels (MDF, solid wood) over enamel
- effect coat over light RAL enamels under a gloss clear
- decorative items and small goods, interior use

Acrylic hardener. Pot life 6 h at 20 °C.
- S50Thinner% by weight: 40 %dealer% by volume: 45 %dealer
standard, 18–25 °C
Dealer: thinner speed (fast/slow) and spray technique are used to tune the effect. Working viscosity estimated at ~12–15 s VZ-4 (derived, not published).
- S80Thinner% by weight: 40 %recommended% by volume: 45–48 %recommended
above ~25 °C, large flat panels; flake lays down flatter and more evenly
Longer open time lets the flake lie flat → brighter, more uniform shimmer; more sag and dust risk. Does not change cure time.
- S30Thinner% by weight: 40 %recommended% by volume: 45–48 %recommended
cool shop (<18 °C), vertical work, or when you want a more sparkly, grainy effect
Fast flash freezes the flakes in random orientation — grainier, less depth; risk of dry spray and orange peel.

15–20 cm distance, 50 % overlap, fan fully open, constant speed and gun angle — evenness of the pearl depends on it. A final light 'mist' pass (a bit further, faster) evens out mottling. Strain through 190 µm, not 125 µm (fine strainers hold back flake). Stir before pouring and agitate the cup — the pearl settles.
Conventional spray
- Consumption
- 150 g/m²dealer
Conventional air spray gives the finest break-up and most even pearl; transfer efficiency only up to ~40 % (methods page).
Airmix (air-assisted airless)
Fine for production runs on fronts; keep atomising air low so you don't scatter flake orientation. Pump filter no finer than 100 mesh / ~150 µm.
Airless
- Recommendation
- not recommendedrecommended
Not recommended: airless lays down too much film for a thin effect coat and gives patchy flake orientation.

- Don'ts
- don't sand the pearl coat
- don't leave it without a clear topcoat
- don't strain through a fine 125 µm strainer
- don't flood it on — the flake floats and mottles
- don't use the mix after 6 h pot life
Storage
Safety: Flammable, solvent-borne; AC40 hardener contains isocyanates. Spray in a booth with extraction, wearing an A2P2 organic-vapour respirator, gloves and eye protection.
