PolyurethanePrimer

PPS40720

PPS40720 white PU primer for PU foam (PPU) and expanded polystyrene

Two-pack white polyurethane primer with good adhesion to polyurethane foam mouldings (PPU) and expanded polystyrene, and high solids (official site). The dealer also lists adhesion to MDF and use under coloured enamels.

  • priming cast PU-foam parts (mouldings, frames, cornices, appliqués)
  • priming expanded polystyrene
  • prepping PU foam and MDF for coloured PU enamels
  • flexible parts and difficult PU foam (dealer note)

Fixed ratio, don't eyeball it. C20051 isn't listed at the dealer, so check availability with Technocolor.

Start at the low end and test on an offcut of the polystyrene first: PU solvents can eat into foam.

alternative from the dealer listing (universal PU thinner)

The dealer listing for PPS40720 sits at /pps40040/, its description text names PPS40040 and its component table has no hardener, so these figures may really belong to PPS40040. Don't use it on polystyrene without a test patch.

For big flat parts. On delicate PU-foam décor use HVLP or airmix instead.

Process and compatibility

Substrate preparation
Degrease PU foam to remove mould release, scuff with an abrasive pad, de-dust. On polystyrene just remove dust, no solvent wipe.recommended
Goes over
PU foam (PPU) / expanded polystyrene / MDF (dealer)
Sanding
abrasive pads K120 (schedule) / P220–P320 for a smooth baserecommended
Temperature and humidity
18–25 °C, RH ≤ 70 %recommended
Don'ts
  • Don't spray polystyrene without a test patch first — the solvent can melt the foam
  • Don't change the C20051 ratio (20 % by weight)
  • Don't use the mix past its 3 h pot life
  • Don't spray in the cold or high humidity (isocyanate + moisture = bubbles)

Storage

Safety: Two-pack PU with an isocyanate hardener and organic solvents: spray booth, A2P3 charcoal respirator, nitrile gloves, keep away from ignition sources.

Value tags: “official”, “dealer”, “catalog”, “schedule” are Technocolor data; “workshop” is from our own datasheets; “recommended” is our engineering estimate (hover to see the reasoning).

Not covered by the sources
  • No TDS/datasheet found (web search budget exhausted; none in the local sources)
  • Hardener C20051: not on the dealer site, nothing known about it beyond the code
  • Dealer technical figures (solids, viscosity, pot life, drying) may belong to PPS40040 — the listing is mixed up
  • Viscosity method 'CF-8' isn't converted to DIN4 (25 s on an 8 mm-orifice cup is far thicker than DIN4 can measure; the derived spray viscosity is an estimate)
  • Shelf life, storage temperature and pack sizes
  • Gloss level not stated
  • Not itself in the PDF catalogs: the 2025–2026 catalogue lists the sister coloured PU primer series PPS40 (PC20042/PC20 20/25 %, S50 20–30 %, 79 % solids, 150 g/m²) and the special-effects catalogue (p.15, 'Отделка ППУ и полистоуна') prescribes the PPS400XX adhesion primers for PU foam after thorough degreasing — PPS40720 is not named
  • Density, recoat window, max film build, lightfastness, chemical resistance (sanding time only derived from the PPU schedule)
