Chrome effect – gold (decorative mirror-metallic paint)

Single-pack, solvent-borne decorative metallic paint (acrylic binder with metallic pigments) with a 'chrome' effect: bright, rich metallic lustre and a mirror-like reflective film. Imitates gilding/gold leaf without precious metals at a fraction of the cost. Smooth, fade-resistant. Interior only. Less abrasion-resistant than two-pack enamels, so on parts that get handled it can be clear-coated (the dealer suggests ATL70 aerosol touch-up lacquer) — but any lacquer on top dulls the mirror effect.

  • furniture and interior décor accents
  • accessories, frames, mouldings, carvings
  • art and craft work
  • imitation gilding / gold leaf
  • wood, metal, PU foam (PPU), glass and more
  • interior only; not for surfaces under constant wear

Sanding between coats

HVLP / touch-up gun, 1.0–1.3 mm tip, 1.5–2.0 bar inlet with the trigger pulled, ≤0.7 bar at the cap, fluid closed right down, fan wide open, 15–20 cm, 50–75 % overlap. Stir before filling and every so often while spraying. Spray over a smooth, level, ideally glossy base — the smoother the substrate, the stronger the chrome.

Conventional spray

Consumption
20–30 g/m²dealer

Conventional air spray (official methods page: the universal, most common method — transfer efficiency only up to 40 % but a good result); a last light 'drop/mist' pass from a little further away evens out the flake.

Brush

The liquid-leaf catalog allows brushing (soft synthetic or squirrel brush, neat or +5–10 % S10). Brushing gives a weaker mirror with brush marks; fine for small décor, carvings, edge touch-up.

Process and compatibility

Substrate preparation
Clean, dry, degreased, dust-free. Technocolor (special-effects catalog, 'Chrome'): primer PPS50277 → black enamel RAL 9005 → gloss lacquer ATL21226 → chrome effect onto the gloss surface → gloss acrylic lacquer ATL21226. Sand the primer P320–P400; let the gloss base cure and, if needed, scuff very lightly with P800–P1000 / grey pad. On bare, unfilled wood the effect sinks into the grain.recommended

Sanding
never sand or polish the effect coatrecommended
Temperature and humidity
18–25 °C, 50–70 % RH; paint and workpiece at room temperaturerecommended
Don'ts
  • don't use outdoors
  • don't leave it unprotected on high-wear surfaces (tops, handles)
  • don't sand or polish the effect coat
  • don't flood it — heavy coats mottle and darken the flake
  • don't forget to stir — the pigment settles
  • remember any clear coat on top reduces/changes the mirror effect — do a test panel first

Safety: Solvent-borne — flammable. Spray in a booth with extraction, wear an A2 organic-vapour + P2 respirator, gloves and eye protection. No smoking or open flame. See the maker's SDS for details (not found).
