S51

S51 thinner for 1K alkyd metal coatings

Clear, colourless thinner; the official page says nothing more. The 2025–2026 catalog and the «exterior metal materials» leaflet list S51 as the thinner for the 1K alkyd metal range: PTL30 DM clear converter and PPL30 DM enamel-converter (both 5 gloss), at 10–20 % (weight or volume not specified). Technocolor lists S51 for no other product; the 2K PU, acrylic and polyester wood systems use S50/S80 and the other thinners.

  • Thinning PTL30 DM clear metal converter, 10–20 %
  • Thinning PPL30 DM metal enamel-converter, 10–20 %

S51 is a component, not a base: proportions are set on the base material's page. No base in the catalog lists a ratio for S51 yet — see the table below.

Mixing matrix

  • PTL30 DMThinner

Spray (catalog icon read as conventional/pneumatic) on ferrous metal (cast iron, steel), 60–80 g/m².

No hardener — 1K product (inferred: the catalog lists none). Start at 10 %; move towards 20 % if you get orange peel or the shop is cold.

  • PPL30 DMThinner

Spray (catalog icon read as conventional/pneumatic) on steel structures, 60–80 g/m².

Pigmented enamel — stir the settled pigment back in fully before thinning.

Percentages are per 100 parts of component A.

Technocolor lists only spray for these products; if brushing, keep thinning minimal (≤10 %). S51 is a sensible gun flush after alkyd materials (inference; Technocolor does not state it).

Process and compatibility

Temperature and humidity

Don'ts
  • Do not substitute S51 for S50/S80 in 2K PU or acrylic systems — it is not listed for them
  • Do not thin past 20 % — film build and corrosion protection drop
  • Do not mix into waterborne products

Safety: Flammable liquid (an inference, not Technocolor data). Use with ventilation and keep it away from ignition sources. Wear gloves and a respirator with an A (organic vapour) filter.
